Does cropping reduce image quality?

Does cropping change the file size?
Cropping removes pixels, so the file almost always gets smaller, but not by as much as resizing the same area would. A 4000x3000 photo cropped to a 3000x3000 square keeps three quarters of the pixels, so the file lands around three quarters of its original weight.
